La comunicación científica tradicional, con base en revistas arbitradas y acceso cerrado, ha sido el pilar de la validación y difusión del conocimiento durante décadas. Sin embargo, este modelo enfrenta cuestionamientos por su lentitud, altos costos y falta de transparencia; esto ha impulsado el surgimiento de alternativas como preprints y ciencia abierta. El presente estudio busca determinar si el sistema tradicional está siendo desplazado, o complementado por estas nuevas formas de comunicación y abarca el período comprendido entre 2018 a 2023. Para realizarlo, se adopta un enfoque bibliométrico cuantitativo de alcance exploratorio-descriptivo. Los resultados muestran un crecimiento exponencial de preprints y repositorios abiertos, pero, las revistas tradicionales aún dominan en citaciones y reconocimiento institucional.  De igual manera, el estudio revela una transición hacia un sistema híbrido, donde coexisten ambos paradigmas. Esta transformación plantea oportunidades y desafíos, destacando la necesidad de desarrollar estándares de calidad adaptativos y políticas flexibles que reconozcan la diversidad de formatos.
