University leadership and governance in higher education institutions are essential elements for addressing the challenges posed by a dynamic and demanding global environment. This article examines, through a literature review, the emerging trends and challenges that define educational change in the context of university administration. Key aspects such as the adoption of participatory models in decision-making, the integration of digital technologies to optimize processes, the strengthening of inclusive policies, and the promotion of sustainability as a cross-cutting axis in academic management are identified. The analysis highlights that these trends offer significant opportunities to transform higher education, but they also face structural and cultural barriers that limit their implementation. These barriers include inequalities in access to resources, technological gaps, and resistance to change in traditional governance structures. This study underscores the importance of strategic approaches that enable institutions to balance their local objectives with global demands, to contribute to their sustainable development and social impact.
